You’ll also be smart to think about what makes you different from other students that are applying - this is crucial when someone is sat reviewing hundreds of applications - you'll need to stand out from the crowd.
Are you involved with a community group or have you done voluntary work at home or overseas.
How have you demonstrated leadership skills?
These are the questions that both you and your referee will be answering in your application and it pays to make sure that you'll have something to write - you may need to step up your involvement or take on more responsibility for the next few months.
There’s huge competition for some of the major programs – for example, the Millennium scholarship program.
You’ll need to be particularly gifted in your area or be able to demonstrate exceptional ability or commitment.
For other programs, such as the Davidson Fellows, you'll need to show that you've produced significant work in your area, this could be a thesis or a musical score.
